JOGLO House from Central Java, Indonesia
A "Joglo" is a traditional, central Java Island home. The Joglo in the Impact Imports warehouse (pictured here) is approximately 100 years old and is made entirely from teak. This original Joglo is truly one-of-a-kind. It was removed from an area of Java Island, Indonesia, called Sidoarjo that was 'flooded' with mud, displacing many villagers. The story can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/yzmfrdo and you can also Google "sidoarjo mud flow." The mudflow in Sidoarjo, which started in May of 2006 and has swallowed five villages and left thousands homeless, is still flowing today. Shortly after the mud started flowing, I met a man who had purchased this Joglo house from a displaced villager. I watched this man meticulously hand sand, repair, fix / match carvings and re-oil every piece of teak. He then re-framed the roof area and re assembled the house. This took one and a half years. I finally bought this piece in January 2008 and have enjoyed looking at it every day. I know you would enjoy it as well as it is simply stunning. This is a RECLAIMED TEAK structure, so it would qualify for LEED Certification!
